I want to restore my system to how it was several days ago, as I am having
trouble deleting a virus. The system restore wizard says I should be able to
highlight a date on the calendar shown to do this but the only date I seem
able to highlight is today's. What am I doing wrong?

Possibly nothing.
If there are no other dates, System Restore is not an option for you this
time.
Search for the virus with removal instructions here:
http://www.symantec.com/search/

Many things can cause loss of Restore Points, when they are gone, they are
gone and can not be recovered or used.
Some of the things are:
Available space on hard drive
Computer usage
Space you dedicate to System Restore
If you use Real Player, try doing without it for a few days:

And others.
