Hi,

I installed Service Pack 2 on the XP machine. No matter how I configured the
firewall, e.g. with firewall enabled, adding exception ports and programs, or
completely disabling it, my sw application can't communicate with other sw
correctly. However, after I uninstalled the sp2, everything went ok. I'm
wondering,

1. if disabling firewall functions the same as not being installed, there
must be something else in sp2 affects my sw. What could it be?

2. if firewall does have impact on the applications even when it's disabled,
how to configure?

Any idea?

Thanks in advance.

It would be helpful if you started by telling us what the application is.
Then if there's anything else that might contribute to an informed
discussion, add that too. Please don't make us try and guess what your
problem is. There really isn't enough information here to do anything with.

It depends on what the software is, and what it is attempting to do... There
are several major security enhancements with Windows XP SP2... Firewall is
the major addition, but there are also Internet Explorer enhancements, and
several other security exposers that have been closed... You should
thoroughly test any and all applications on Service Pack 2 before
upgrading...

the two major features of the firewall that I ran into are "file and print
sharing" was turned off, so creating network shares on the local workstation
did nothing... they could not be detected on the network... and specific
port openings that caused applications not to communicate properly on the
network...
