Windows XP Network setup problem |
|
|
Hello everyone. I am trying to set up a home network and I am running into a
problems. I am running 2 computers, one has XP Pro and the other has XP home
edition. The first computer running XP pro is connected to a Linxsys
Wireless G router by a cat 5 cable. The second machine is connected to the
network, wirelessly, by a Lynksis USB NIC. Ironically, the computer running
wirelessly can see the workgroup with both computers. The first computer can
see the workgroup name, but can't see the other computer. When I click on
the workgroup I get an error message stating (The network is not accessible
you might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the
admin of this server to find out if you have access permission. Network path
was not found.) I have tried everythink I can think of. Also, is should
mention that the workgroup names match.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Scott J |

Carey,
Thanks for responding. Actually, I did everything that was on your website.
The one thing I didn't do, that I just did, was to uninstall a software
firewall that came with the computer. Since I did the unistallation and
re-booted, I can now see the shared folders but I can't access them. The
folders are also saying that I might not have permission to access them and
check with the admin. I checked the folders and the file shareing is turned
on for each folder. Any ideas???

Yes, from the Pro machine I can see all of the folders I shared on the Home

On an NTFS partition, Windows XP Home does not allow sharing these folders:
a.. User folders directly in Documents and Settings
b.. Program Files
c.. The main Windows folder
It is possible, however, to share subfolders within those folders.

Carey,
Thanks for responding. Actually, I did everything that was on
your
website.
The one thing I didn't do, that I just did, was to uninstall a
software
firewall that came with the computer. Since I did the
unistallation
and
re-booted, I can now see the shared folders but I can't access
them.
The
folders are also saying that I might not have permission to
access
them
and
check with the admin. I checked the folders and the file
shareing
is
turned
on for each folder. Any ideas???

That is interesting. Both machines are formated with NTFS, yet on one it

The point here is you can share individual folders within the users folder,
but you cannot share the users folder.
Does that make sense?
Ensure Simple File Sharing is enabled on the XP Pro machine (double-click My
Computer, Click Tools, Folder Options, View, last option is Simple File
Sharing)
On both PC's do the following:
click Start, click Run, type:
net user guest /active:yes (and hit enter)
Then, click Start, click Run, type:
control userpasswords2 (and hit enter)
Click Guest, click Reset Password and then click OK without entering a new
password.
Finally, download and install this registry patch on both PCs and reboot for

The point here is you can share individual folders within the users
folder,
but you cannot share the users folder.
Does that make sense?
Ensure Simple File Sharing is enabled on the XP Pro machine (double-click
My
Computer, Click Tools, Folder Options, View, last option is Simple File
Sharing)
On both PC's do the following:
click Start, click Run, type:
net user guest /active:yes (and hit enter)
Then, click Start, click Run, type:
control userpasswords2 (and hit enter)
Click Guest, click Reset Password and then click OK without entering a
new
password.
Finally, download and install this registry patch on both PCs and reboot
for
changes to take effect:

That is interesting. Both machines are formated with NTFS, yet on one
it
works and the other it doesn't. Carey, is there something I am
missing.
I
am pulling my hair out over this. Do you have any suggestions as to
what
I
can do? I have pinged both machines, and have no problems there. I
can
see
everything, yet I can't access it all. I uninstalled firewall software
and
even tried disabling the sp2 firewall and that didn't do anything. It
is
set
to allow file shareing. Based on everything I have read I truley
believe
this is an sp2 issue and there has to be a work-around.
Carey - I really do appreciate your help and time. If you have any
other
suggestions I would really appreciate it.

I have done that a number of times. The exact error message reads as
follows:
"\\HOME2\Danny - My Documents is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrateor
of
this
server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is
denied."
Also, I don't think I mentioned this but I am running sp2 on both
machines.

Carey,
Yes, from the Pro machine I can see all of the folders I shared
on
the
Home
machine. Yes, the folder that can be accessed does belong to the
user
that
is logged on (me). I thought that could be the issue, so I
logged
on
as
my
son and I still couldn't access his folder. Also, you should
know,
that I
have my computers set up to log in automatically, no passwords
are
needed
at
this time.

The XP Home machine can see and access folders/files on both
machines.
The
XP Pro Machine can now see the shared folders on the XP Home
machine,
since I
removed the firewall software from the XP Home machine.
Interestingly
enough, I have 4 accounts set up on the XP Home machine and
shared
each
users
"my documents" folder to the network. I can see all folders
on
the
XP
Home
machine from the XP Pro machine but I can't open them
(actually,
I
can
open
just one of them). On the others I get the message "you can
not
access
this
folder, you might not have permission". I have checked to
make
sure
that
file sharing for these folders is turned on.

Carey,
Thanks for responding. Actually, I did everything that was
on
your
website.
The one thing I didn't do, that I just did, was to
uninstall a
software
firewall that came with the computer. Since I did the
unistallation
and
re-booted, I can now see the shared folders but I can't
access
them.
The
folders are also saying that I might not have permission to
access
them
and
check with the admin. I checked the folders and the file
shareing
is
turned
on for each folder. Any ideas???
