i'm trying to create a movie, but not only is the video footage recording at
a much faster rate, but the audio is totally out of synch with the footage.
this is driving me insane, any ideas?

This is often a codec issue, have a look at www.papajohn.org and see the
problem solving > hangs and crashes section, or if you have MM2.1 turn off
the codecs using the tab in the options palette.
