Windows XP won't start |
|
|
Using Windows XP Home w/ SP2 on a Dell Dimension 8100 and it started acting funny. It would sometimes not start but started from last known configuration. Decided to shut it down and not use it until I could get the new computer on line.
Now want to recover my data on the old computer and it started Windows but churned away and was really slow. I was in the process of pulling the data off and I got a BSOD kernel error and it shut down. Now it won't start in the safe mode, known last config or normal mode.
Have attempted the recovery console from the XP CD several times with no luck - only want to pull my data off and then do a complete install.
Researched how to do a XP repair install on the Michael Stevens Tech website.
Have 2 courses of action and are looking for advice on how to best proceed.
1) remove the disk and install in the new computer - but it is running Vista so I may get a boot error - 2 operating systems trying to load, or maybe do a hot swap - plugging in the HD after the new computer is up and running (hot swapping doesn't seem like a good approach). This would simplify moving the data across.
2) Doing the Michael Stevens Tech approach to XP Repair Install and if it works pull the data off onto a CD and copy the files to the new computer.
Thoughts, comments or a better idea from anyone?
In advance - thanks for the help - really need it. |
