New XP build decided my secondary drive is unformatted! |

Due to numerous problems I had to do a fresh XP Pro install on my primary drive last night. My secondary drive is formatted in NTFS and had no problems (it's only a few months old). When the new install was finished XP decided that it sees the secondary drive, only that it is now "unformatted".
Now, a similar thing happened to me a while ago on a completely different machine. I took the secondary drive out of the machine and temporarily replaced it with an old drive I had laying around b/c I wanted to make sure there wasn't anything important on the old drive before I destroyed it. When I put the original secondary drive back in the machine XP decided it was now "unformatted". The way I solved this problem was to use data recovery software, however it took a LOOONG time for all the files to be recovered, in other words I gave up.
Third, I spoke with my roommate last night and he has experienced this problem as well on his machine when he had to rebuild it. He told me there is a workaround, but of course he can't remember how he did it. It seems this has to be some problem with XP, as it has occurred on three separate machines, with a total of 6 different hard drives. So, I'm wondering if anybody has heard of this, and/or knows of a fix other than recovery software. |
