I wonder if someonce can help me. I have Windows XP Pro (sp2) wna when i boot up, the screen is black with a blinking curser. This stays like this for 7 minutes before fully booing into windows. I tried the selective startup and removing the processes but didnt seem to work. I am not sure if the master boot record is corrupt.

Has anyone come across this and if so what can i do to make it boot up normally.

Nothing has been added to the computer and this started a few months ago. Other than that the system runs fine.

Please help

Brett

At what point in the boot up does the cursor go to blinking?

Any visible part of the bootup taking longer than normal, like memory test or drive recognition?

Since the system does eventually start, you should be able to run a disk check on the system drive with fix errors and recover bad sectors selected. I believe if you have disk problems this will either resolve them or highlight them. (Procedure: Right click on C drive in Win Explorer and select Properties > Tools tab> "Check Now..." button under error checking. Select both fix options and click Start. You will be advised that Windows needs exclusive access to the disk to run the check and would you like to schedule the test for the next restart. Select Yes and then restart your computer. The disk check can run long, but I would suggest you monitor it to see what it finds and fixes.)

This problem could be a caused by a variety of issues. I have also had a lot of success with Hardware problems using a free program at: http://www.memtest86.com/ It is a memory testor, but often when it reports memory errors, it can also be a motherboard or other related hardware issue. You might have to swap out some memory or pull one stick at a time if you have more than one, to troubleshoot the problem.

If you have known working spares of your cards, like Video or Sound, new or from other computers, it can help to temporarily replace them to see if it resolves the problem as well.

Hope this helps...
