Are Folder Passwords Possible? |
| Im trying to add a password to a folder, but have it be able to open on windows 200 and up. I've already checked the windows help file and i dont see anything on folder passwords except zipped folders (which dosent work on the comp[uters i use). SO is there any way to use command prompt to set a password, a certain file option, or some kind of program that you can install to your flash drive to open the folder that's protected? Btw, i run windows xp pro. Ty for any answers! |

Secure Folder |

You can set folders to be secure without 3rd party software in windows xp. Although it's not exactly a 'folder password'. It's accessible only by specified users. First of all, you have to be using the NTFS file system. the FAT and FAT32 files systems do not support it and I'm not entirely sure about HPFS, but NTFS is the file system you should use anyways. Now when you go to the 'PROPERTIES' dialog of the folder, goto "SHARING" and select 'Make this folder private' and the folder will only be accessible by someone using your username and password (If you use an external drive the other computer needs the same username AND password) there's also a way to set it up so you can access it from another user account but you'd have to log onto it (the folder) with the username and password & there's a few system tweak settings that I can't remember. Also if you have it private and shared anyone accessing it from another computer would have to enter the username and password and someone from the same computer could access it through the network by accessing your computer through the network neighborhood and again Username & password.
Hope that helps (hope you can understand it) |

| Thanks for the help, but after searching the internet i've found many encryption programs (im using blowfish advanced cs) that alow the use of passwords and encryption. And best of all it's small enough to be installed on a jumpdrive (it's only 2.8mb).Thanks again for looking trough old topics to help me! |
