I want to upgrade to an Athlon 64 cpu and have Win XP home sp 2 but it is
only 32 bit.
Will I need to buy the XP 64 bit OS to make it work or can I upgrade
something into my existing OS to make it work ?

The Athlon64 CPU fully supports 32-bit operating systems.
