RE: Repair Problem - Trying to repair missing system file error - XP
installed with sp2 - Repair won't complete because my drivers for the ASUS
P5LD2 motherboard won't load first.
I woke up one morning and my system wouldn't boot, it said there was no
system file in the windows/system32/config/ directory. I had not installed
any new hardware without restore points. When I turned it off everything was
working well. I have since replaced the system file by installing a second
XP in a different directory, and then copying the file over in dos mode, but
the bootup hangs on MUP.sys in safe mode dos prompt. I tried to use repair
from the install disk but because the Asus P5LD2 drivers that are needed for
their fast EIDE connections don't load first, I think the repair can't see
the hard disk. I left the driver disk in the A drive and repair did seem to
find it once and ran a little but looked like it didn't complete. Any ideas?
I have loaded lots of software over time to this install and would really
like to avoid having to reinstall everything. I had successful reboots after
all the installs. I hope someone can help.
I have Norton Antivirus 2005 installed and it has completed without errors
prior to the problem, so I don't think it is a virus or worm. I can boot the
system with the new install, but it's registration prompt is ticking down
and I don't really want to use that install, I'm just using it to get access
to files I needed. I'm currently back working on my old PC running XP with
sp1. But this system is older and slower. My new hardware is running on
Intel Dual core 3.2 GHz processor and is faster. I have plenty of memory 4
GB.
Sorry for the long note, but I thought if anybody could help they might need
the information.
