I've been reading and reading - but unable to find a solution.

I need to obtain update rollup 1 for the xbox and I do NOT have an XBOX Live
account.

The link to request new discs is broken.

I contacted on-line support - 48 hours later they replied asking me to call
support.

Today, I called support and after going thru 2 people, I was routed to the
"expert"

It was like I was speaking a foreign language - he was totally unaware of
the problem. I told him it is on AVSForum, the NG's, etc. Further, he was
constantly spouting incorrect info - first he tells me that the Xbox is
really a Linksys or HP, then he tells me there are three - linksys, hp, xbox
(just repeated what I said like 5 mins ago) - then he tells me "Oh hey, I
found it!" and points me to the url for 890294 article in a painfully slow
way "H T T P colon slash slash..." - last - he suggests that I contact HBO
because maybe they can adjust the stream for me! I tell him - No, dude, it
is fixed already with rollup 1 - I just need to obtain rollup 1.

For whatever reason - it took me 30 minutes to explain my problem to him.
I'm pretty sure I remained calm and polite - but CMON! So now, he's
"researching the problem" and is going to call me back in ~ 48 hours. Some
how - I just don't have any confidence that he will find a solution.

The 890924 KB article says this

Xbox
A software update that will enable playback of copy-protected TV content on
Media Center Extender for Xbox has been released to Xbox final certification.
This update is scheduled to release from certification in January 2005.

The link has been missing for about a year now.

I just don't understand why this is so hard.

Can anyone tell me how I can obtain the update rollup 1 for Xbox without an
Xbox live account?

Thanks,
Jim

The fulfillment house offer to obtain updated discs ended on 10/31. You can
still acquire the PC half of the
update from Microsoft.com (download the HP or Linksys package from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/extender/owner/support.mspx#Rollup1MCE);
the Xbox half of the update is now solely available via Xbox Live.

While I can appreciate this - seems like they could provide the bits online
and let me slipstream it into my existing DVD bits and burn a new disc.

Yet another solution would be for them to incorporate a 1 year old fix on
the discs they are currently selling in stores (even the Microsoft Company
Store). I know this is crazy talk - but I'm just thinking outside the box
here.

Can you imagine purchasing Windows XP at the store today for your home PC -
then learning (after digging thru forums for a couple days b/c the ms web
site and support said it should work) that the only way you can get SP2 is to
purchase a 12 month subscription for on-line gaming. I'm not really seeing
the difference here.

This is not a deal breaker for me, but I can see how it would be for some.
If you lose 100 people to the compettion for something so simple which could
be resolved about 3 or 4 different (lightweight) ways - that's far too many.
I suspect this may be the last straw for 1000's and not 100's.

OK - we can close this thread...I'm done whining. Thanks to everyone that

What is the authorative way to tell if I have it or not?

- In the extender - I choose settings/extender/about - this says version 1
- HBO and Cinemax play for about 5 seconds - then give me the Content
Restriction message. These channels play fine on the Media Center computer -
just not on my xbox extender.

This has never worked w/ HBO. I bought the Xbox Extender kit about 10 days

In which case your remedy is to return it to your supplier as it is old stock.
Get it replaced with the current version that _does_ work properly with HBO.

According to Todd, discs shipped since the 'beginning of this year contain
the latest version of the Extender software'

You can't burn your own DVDs with the appropriate signatures require for
legal Xboxes to read/execute programs off of.

I need to obtain update rollup 1 for the xbox and I do NOT have an
XBOX
Live
account.

The link to request new discs is broken.

I contacted on-line support - 48 hours later they replied asking me
to
call
support.

Today, I called support and after going thru 2 people, I was routed
to
the
"expert"

It was like I was speaking a foreign language - he was totally
unaware
of
the problem. I told him it is on AVSForum, the NG's, etc. Further,
he
was
constantly spouting incorrect info - first he tells me that the Xbox
is
really a Linksys or HP, then he tells me there are three - linksys,
hp,
xbox
(just repeated what I said like 5 mins ago) - then he tells me "Oh
hey,
I
found it!" and points me to the url for 890294 article in a
painfully
slow
way "H T T P colon slash slash..." - last - he suggests that I
contact
HBO
because maybe they can adjust the stream for me! I tell him - No,
dude,
it
is fixed already with rollup 1 - I just need to obtain rollup 1.

For whatever reason - it took me 30 minutes to explain my problem to
him.
I'm pretty sure I remained calm and polite - but CMON! So now, he's
"researching the problem" and is going to call me back in ~ 48
hours.
Some
how - I just don't have any confidence that he will find a solution.

The 890924 KB article says this

Xbox
A software update that will enable playback of copy-protected TV
content
on
Media Center Extender for Xbox has been released to Xbox final
certification.
This update is scheduled to release from certification in January
2005.

The link has been missing for about a year now.

I just don't understand why this is so hard.

Can anyone tell me how I can obtain the update rollup 1 for Xbox
without
an
Xbox live account?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

I am in the same situation as you are. I bought the Extender for Xbox at
the beginning of Oct at BestBuy. I had to wait about 2-3 weeks for both
paying and shipping of my new MCE 2005 PC and when it gets here, I can't
watch protected content because of outdated Extender Discs. Like I said,
the Xbox Extender Stuff was bought just about 3 weeks ago and it still has
the outdated software 5.1.2700.2180

And the kick in the pants of it all is that my PC came in on Oct 31 and by
the time I had time to setup, schedule and try out this stuff, the offer was
over :-(

Todd,

Thanks for the definitive answer.

Is there any reason why the update is not available via the web like Linksys
and HP updates?

It just seems wrong that I purchase an xbox extender after 10-31-05 and it
is missing a very important update which was released about 12 months ago.
The only way I can get this fix is to purchase a subscription to something
I'm only going to use to download the fix (should be a one-off event).

Further - the KB article on support.microsoft.com should be commented to say
exactly what you said - only available via xbox live service, so that
customers don't have to search NG's and forums for an answer. Fix the web
site and let the people answering the phones at xbox support know about this.

It seems to me that with all the other limitations and challenges that exist
which are preventing MCE from really competing in the market, that MS
wouldn't wrong MCE people like this. This seems like such a simple thing to
fix and something that could make a lesser geek say "Screw it", kick the MCE
to the curb, and get a TIVO. Really is hard to understand.

The fulfillment house offer to obtain updated discs ended on 10/31. You can
still acquire the PC half of the
update from Microsoft.com (download the HP or Linksys package from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/extender/owner/support.mspx#Rollup1MCE);
the Xbox half of the update is now solely available via Xbox Live.

Your remedy is to return it to BestBuy for refund or replacement as it is old
stock lacking crucial functionality. Then get the current version that _does_
work properly with HBO.

I stopped by the store and explained the situation...

Is there a way to confirm via the part number?

The part number I currently have (Version 1.0) is X10-62420-01

The part number on other boxes for Xbox Extender is X10-6237501

The fact that it is a lower number has me concerned. Can anyone confirm?

On the MCE system Start->Programs->Accesories->Media Center->Media Center

When the updated disc loads on the xbox, you'll see a Dec, 2004 date

When the xbox starts up w/ the disk in - I don't see any date at all

Has this ever worked correctly with HBO? When did you buy your Xbox Extender?

This has never worked w/ HBO. I bought the Xbox Extender kit about 10 days
ago.

In which case your remedy is to return it to your supplier as it is old stock.
Get it replaced with the current version that _does_ work properly with HBO.

Nigel,

Is there a way to tell if the box includes the "new" disc without opening
them? They had about 6 or so left the other day when I was in there. I'd
hate to return it, only to get the same outdated disc as I have again and
again and again until I have tried all of them.
