I was wondering how well 2 hard drives works in MCE 2005? the reason is, i
had a computer go out the other day and i took the 30 gb ata hard drive out
of that computer and just put it in my computer running MCE 2005, it seems
to work okay only everything that runs from that hard drive is a little
slower.

I tried setting my tv settings to record onto just that hard drive but when
i do that the tv video and audio get really choppy and the playback of video
from that hard drive is the same way.
Is there something i didnt do right in hooking up the second hard drive or
is having 2 seperate disks not supported under MCE 2005?

sorry for the long post

Separate hard disks works well in MCE. But if its an older drive, with a slower interface, it may not work well in MCE, just due to the sheer volume of data that's being transferred to/from the drive. At a minimum, the drive should be ATA-100, in my opinion.

You may also want to check the settings Device Manager for the Hard Disk Controller and ensure that DMA is turned on for that controller/drive.

I have three drives in my system and all of them work extremely well. Make
sure you are using a 80-conductor Ultra DMA cable and not the old
40-conductor cables that tend to be on CD's installed on the secondary IDE
channel.

Yes you can have two hard drives no problem.

Check the DMA for the hard drive is set.
If the hard is low than 7200 rpm it could also be the problem

If it is a Dell, make sure the drive is turned on in the BIOS. If not, it
works, but in PIO mode.

You haven't turned on the drive. If you check the BIOS, that drive will be
listed as OFF. It will work, but force PIO mode. Change it to AUTO, reboot
and you'll be in UDMA mode.

Well, in short i got it fixed, heres how:

turns out my primary hard drive is a SATA, which has a different ide cable
all its own and there are no extra connectors on it to even hook a secondary
hard drive on that cable. Thats fine, my secondary hard drive isnt SATA,
just regular ATA so i had it plugged in to the line with my dvd-rw, because
there was an extra connection available on that line.

Now i know when i first put that hard drive in i went to the bios to check
the settings for my new hard drive, i enabled my primary slave thinking that
was my new hard drive. HOWEVER, i didnt realize that because its on that
secondary line, its not the PRIMARY slave but the SECONDARY slave. Enabling
the primary slave caused me problems and the computer would not boot, but
forced the drive to run in PIO.

So i enabled the SECONDARY slave, and boom i have UDMA level 2. The drive is
capable of 5 but i think i read somewhere that the drive can only run as
fast as the slowest thing on the line. The Dvd-rw is UDMA level 2 so the
hard drive matches it. Anyhow just thought you would want to know. Enable
the drive in the bios, and watch where you connect your drive! Thanks for
the help guys.

Chris
p.s. Sorry for the horribly long post
