Can you use remote desktop with Home edition? |
|
|
Hello to all,
Can you use remote desktop with the home edition of Windows XP?
Second question:
If so... can you use the Home edition from home with remote desktop, and log
onto it while using the professional edition at work?
thanks |

My understanding is that it will work on Windows 95, 98, NT4.0, 2000 or any
version of XP.
You can be on any of the above and connect to any of the others, as long as
Remote Desktop is installed on all computers connecting to and\or from.

You can't use XP Home as remote desktop host. You can use the XP Home or any Windows OS to access a XP Pro using remote desktop.

No.
UltraVNC works fine though.

The answer to question one sort of negates question two. Unless you mean:
Can I be at home and remote into my work computer - which is Windows XP
Professional?
Then the answer is yes.. You can remote from home to work given that the
ports are open through any corporate firewall and personal firewall on the
machine, the Remote Desktop feature is enabled and your user is allowed to
use it (and has a password, etc) and any routers between the work machine
and the actual internet are configured to route such requests properly (if
the IP you have at work is not an external IP.)

Ahh, no, you can remote *from* any of the above but only *to* an XP Pro
machine.
There are tricks to get XP home to do things it normally can't, but I don't
know them.
As for the earlier Windows, you probably want to look at PcAnywhere or
GoToMyPc.
