Here is what I have:
Dell 400SC with MCE2005 Installed.
Sound Card: Chaintech AV-710
Speakers Connected: Logitech Z-680
Sound Card Drivers: Via Arena
DVD Decoder: Nvidia PureVideo
DirectShow Filter: AC3 Filter
MediaCenterPreferredAudioDecorder: AC3 Filter (In windows registry)
Connection between sound card and speadker: S/PDIF

Here is the sequence which recreates my problem. When I play an AVI file in
the MCE, it video and sound are okay. Then, I play a DVD ( DVD files are
copied on the disk), the sound goes to DIGITAL in the speakers LCD display.
When I play the AVI again, I don't get the audio.

Does anyone have any clue what should I look into to fix this problem. I am
totally lost. I would appreciiate if folks here can give me some pointers.

I want to understand what is a DirectShow filter. For, SPDIF connection, I
would think that I (means my PC) don't need any decoder. Let the receiver
decode. I know the Nvidia audio is not compatible with my card. Please throw
some light.

Will try what you suggested. I feel like I need to learn about different
audio encoding that in the DVD, mpeg and avi contents. More information is
always welcome.

Ideally what you're going to want to do is have the soundcard output all
analog and digital sound via SPDIF. If you're using nVidia you shouldn't
need to use the AC3 filter as the nVidia decoder can pipe the AC3 stream to
SPDIF. I'd suggest using Media Player Classic and WMP to diagnose exactly
what's going on when you play back movies, music, and DVD's. Generally SPDIF
can be flaky if it's switched to and from instead of just having a constant
stream from the soundcard for both analog (ie everything that's not AC3 and
DTS) and digital audio.
