Is Dell XPS 600 really too noisy? |
|
|
Is Dell XPS 600 really too noisy?am looking to get a system to run
Windows XP Media Center. I usually by Dell, though not necessarily,
and I'm looking at the XPS 600 or the XPS 400. The price different is
not a major issue, what I'm worried about is that I hear that the XPS
is very noisy. I'm afraid it would be too noisy for my work space,
which is connected to the living room.
If anyone has experience with it, could you tell me if the noise is a
real issue or you think I could live with it.
thanks |

Can't speak to the XPS line, but their Dimension and OptiPlex line is
usually pretty quite and well insulated. XPS should be well insulated as
well, the main thing would be extra heat and a louder hard drive in that
machine that would cause fans to run more. Dell have some forums at
http://support.dell.com that you might try asking for advice about noise.

Check which graphics card, which Intel processor, and other parts that
require fans.
Fans are the primary noise makers.
The fastest, highest performing graphics cards all have fans that are
loud. So, get the manual for the XPS 600, and find out which graphics
card comes with it. Then, search an online store line Newegg and find
if the respective graphics card comes with or without a fan. It should
also say whether the fan is a quiet fan.
We know that Dell only uses Intel processors. Find out which model, and
see if the fan is a quiet kind.
Then, you have the case fans and the fan on the power supply. If Dell's
manual doesn't speak to how quiet the box is or that quiet fans are
used, then you must assume that loud stock fans are in play.
Perhaps Dell customer service may be helpful. I wouldn't be surprised
if CS says, "Oh, we can customize your XPS 600 for near silent running.
You'll just have to pay for it." |
