Hi I have a laptop running XP Pro, with Adaware, Spy Doctor and CA ETrust AV
asoftware.

Not sure whatc has happend, but suddenly, Windows thinks my AV software is
tuend off, i can no longer get onto any web site ( all pages return
unavailable when I type in url, althought I know I am connected to internet
via ADSL; have installed a furher AV software and run that - all coming up
blank.

Anyone any ideas how I can figure out ehat has happend?

Prove that the DSL is working correctly.

Open a Command Prompt and type...

ping yahoo.com

It should replay with something like...

Pinging yahoo.com [216.109.112.135] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 216.109.112.135: bytes=32 time=27ms TTL=55
Reply from 216.109.112.135: bytes=32 time=26ms TTL=55

Reply from 216.109.112.135: bytes=32 time=27ms TTL=55

Ping statistics for 216.109.112.135:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 26ms, Maximum = 27ms, Average = 26ms

If it doesn't try...

Ping 216.109.112.135

does it work ?

Are you using this ADSL connection to post here ?

Hi David

Thanks for your post - yes Pinging does work.

No I'm using my desktop to post here - my laptop wont allow me to display
any web pages or download emails. When I try and connect eg to our own
website, or to update Av signature files or indeed and web site, it seems to
try and connect then just comes up with IE error message 'Internet Explorer
could not open the search page', and if I click on Ok, I then get the normal
Page cannot be displayed message in browser.

Thankls for your help

Alex

What about FireFox ? Do you have it installed and can you access wen pages via FireFox ?

Here is some software I'd like you to use. Start with BHOdemon It could be a broken
Browser Helper Object blocking IE from working correctly.

Please download, install and update the following software...

Ad-aware SE v1.06
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
http://security.kolla.de/

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.
