Adding domain account to local administrators... |

Strange problem. I have some XP Pro machines on which I'm trying to add
network accounts to the local admin group. For some reason, I can only add
local user accounts. It doesn't seem to be showing the Active Directory,
only the local machine. The Domain\Domain Admins group is listed as a
member of the local admin group, and when I log in as a domain admin, I have
admin privilages. I can log in with the network user accounts, though they
have no local admin privileges.
I've tried using the domain admin account, and the local admin account.
I've tried removing the computer from the domain and rejoining it.
Any ideas? |

Make sure you are using the domain as the location [instead of the computer]
to search for user accounts when you are trying to add members. You could
also try to use the command net loc. --- Steve

When I click on "Location," only the local computer is listed. The
domain/directory is not, even when logged in as a domain admin.
What do you mean by "the command net loc.?"

Try the command net localgroup administrators mydomain\username /add [using
actual netbios domain name and username] to see what happens. If that gives an
error run the support tool netdiag on that computer to see if it reports any
problems with dns, dc discovery, or trust/secure channel. The support tools are
on the install disk in the support tools folder. Review the link below to make
sure DNS is correctly configured for your domain since dns is not just used for
host name resolution but also for location of domain controllers via _srv
