Sharing music with Media Center Extenders from a Windows 200 |
|
|
Is this possible? I've created a share, and the media center itself can
access the music files on my server, but none of the extenders can. I'm
assuming that the extenders have their own accounts (on the MCE pc) but I
thought they would use the MCE pc as the conduit to the server? |

Certainly no expert, but I would guess this isn't supported. The issues
folks have with MCE not being able to join domains, is because extenders use
XP's fast user switching to attach. I would expect that a server OS wouldn't
support fast user switching either, which would imply that extenders
couldn't connect. Just a gut feel.

This is possible; you'll either need to make the music share readable by
"everyone" or use a login script to perform drive mapping for the MCX
account (Andy Vanosdale had a blog post on how to do this that was mentioned
in this NG last week)

I read the blog and will try, but my Windows 2003 server isn't in a domain,
it's in a workgroup. Should this still work? The share is already set to be
shareable for "everyone". I think what I really need is how to determine
what the password(s) are for the MCX accounts so that I could create the
accounts on the server. |

This will work against non-domain servers. If you use a login script in the
MCX account, you can log in to the server as any user that you like.
