how to trace someone's IP address |
|
|
Hello,
Thank you in advance for replying to this issue. My antivirus software has
blocked several port scans that were done to my computer, the all have the
same IP address. My antivirus software show me the IP address where it came
from. What should I do to? How can I send a message to that IP (step by step
instructions) to tell them to stop scanning my ports, and is my idea of
letting them know that I can see there IP make me vulnerable by doing this?
Thank You |

Minor point -- not necessarily from the same IP -- there may be
multiple machines involved in the DOS attack (the old game of
setting a number of hijacked machines to go off at the same time)

ignore it and be glad your firewall is doing its job. Your ISP may
also be
doing this to check four quality of service, etc. You are not alone in
seeing this and it should be considered normal. At one time when worm
activity was high I was seeing thousands of attempts to access my
network
every hour in the firewall logs. If you believe that someone is
launching a
denial of service attack directly against you contact your ISP. Such
an
event would show hundreds if not thousands of events in your log every
minute from the same source IP. --- Steve

You likely cannot.
You could report them to their ISP.. But that's about it.
Sure - you might have their IP - but it is likely they are firewalled and
wouldn't get your message.

McAfee's firewall gives you the curious pleasure to "Track an Attack" - it
shows a world map route, the network view, and the registrant view. Have
fun with it.

I agree & note that sending anything to attacker may be
viewed by firewall as indicating he wants to hear from
attacker.

Any advise is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK. |
