I have an Inspiron 600m that doesn't have any sound coming out of the
headphones. When the heqadphones are unplugged, there is sound from the
speakers.
What could be causing this?

Probably a set of faulty headphones.

There is a volume control button on the cord of hedphone check it out
and increse the volume from there if still it does not work then the
headphones are faulty you have to replace them

I tried a different set of headphones that I know work, and they didn't help.

I'll look for the volume control. I tried a headphone set that doesn't have
a volume control, and they did not work either.

It is possible that there is a short in the headphone jack that you are
plugging those into shorting out the jack itself thus producing no sound.

That's pretty well the way it is. It's possible but unlikely that
the laptop uses an extra amplifier for the sound output. If
there is such an amplifier then it might be defective.

So... Should I take this to mean that the functionality of the headphones
and the regular speakers is exactly the same as that of a tape player or
any
other piece of sound equipment? The signal is routed to the speakers, but
when the headphones are plugged in, the speakers are "switched" off and
the
signal is routed to the headphones instead? I guess that makes sense.
But
what I was expecting was that there would be some special driver or other
setting in the operating system affecting the headphones... It's not more
complicated?
