Hi,

I have a Linksys Extender and while it works most of the time, I often need
to restart due to critical errors and in most cases, I need to flip the
power switch at the back as it wouldn't respond to the remote or front
panel.

Is there any way to find out the firmware version I have and make sure I'm
running the latest update on the extender?

I have MCE2005 with rollup 2 installed. This problem is since day one I got
the extender.

Thanks,
Simon

What is the exact error you are getting on the extender when it crashes?

This is not normal (regardless of software version).

Does this only happen with TV, or does it also happen with music and videos
as well?

I only use the extender for watching recorded shows so I can't speak for if
it happens with music.

Thanks,
Simon

I don't have any MPEG1 or 2 video files at the moment, they're all dvr-ms.
It seems though, it's a pattern that every few days, I'd get the critical
error and I need to power cycle the extender.

The MCE computer itself, it's been working great. The last time I rebooted
was from last Windows updates. I haven't had to reboot the PC due to errors
ever since I built the PC.

Thanks,

Simon

Are you running via a wired or wireless connection? If you are on wired,
are there a lot of wireless networks visible from your house?

The extender is on the wired connection. Although I have 2 WAP's at home
but they both are encrypted. I could see roughly 2 more wireless networks
from the neighbors but they all secured. I didn't set up the wireless part
on the extender.

If you're comfortable doing so, you might try removing the wireless card
from your MCX given that you're not using wireless (it's a mini-PCI card, so
it comes out pretty easily)

Todd,

mini-PCI, you mean like PCMCIA? I assume the card is sitting inside the
box? This could be challenging as I need to pull the thing out the rack and
the spaghetti mess at the back is bad enough already :)

If I get some time, I'll give it a try. Hmm, wonder if I can re-use the
mini-PCI card for something else?

Thanks,
Simon

Ususally it happens as soon as I start a recorded show, I'll get
the
beginning for less than few seconds, then I get either out of
memory,
or
extender has encountered a serious error and I have a popup
window
to
restart the extender. In most case, after I hit OK, nothing
happens.
I
usually end up flipping the switch on the back to restart.

Thanks,

Simon

What is the exact error you are getting on the extender when
it
crashes?

Hi,

I have a Linksys Extender and while it works most of the
time,
I
often
need to restart due to critical errors and in most cases, I
need
to
flip
the power switch at the back as it wouldn't respond to the
remote
or
front panel.

Is there any way to find out the firmware version I have and
make
sure
I'm running the latest update on the extender?

I have MCE2005 with rollup 2 installed. This problem is
since
day
one
I
got the extender.

Thanks,
Simon

It's about that size, but it's miniaturized PCI card. Depending upon the
specific card used, a PC driver *might* be available online, in which case
you could use it in a laptop that has a free mini-PCI slot and internal
wireless antenna (without the internal, reception would be really poor).

Todd,

mini-PCI, you mean like PCMCIA? I assume the card is sitting inside the
box? This could be challenging as I need to pull the thing out the rack
and
the spaghetti mess at the back is bad enough already :)

If I get some time, I'll give it a try. Hmm, wonder if I can re-use the
mini-PCI card for something else?

Thanks,
Simon

If you're comfortable doing so, you might try removing the wireless card
from your MCX given that you're not using wireless (it's a mini-PCI
card,
so
it comes out pretty easily)

The extender is on the wired connection. Although I have 2 WAP's at
home
but they both are encrypted. I could see roughly 2 more wireless
networks
from the neighbors but they all secured. I didn't set up the wireless
part
on the extender.

Are you running via a wired or wireless connection? If you are on
wired,
are there a lot of wireless networks visible from your house?

I don't have any MPEG1 or 2 video files at the moment, they're all
dvr-ms.
It seems though, it's a pattern that every few days, I'd get the
critical
error and I need to power cycle the extender.

The MCE computer itself, it's been working great. The last time I
rebooted
was from last Windows updates. I haven't had to reboot the PC due
to
errors
ever since I built the PC.

Thanks,

Simon

Do you have any MPEG-1 or -2 videos you could try playing?

I only use the extender for watching recorded shows so I can't
speak
for
if
it happens with music.

Thanks,
Simon

This is not normal (regardless of software version).

Does this only happen with TV, or does it also happen with
music
and
videos
as well?
