Hi again Jonathan,
Thanks to your help I have *almost* succeeded in my first live webcast using
WME to stream from my webcam/mic combo.
Here is what is going on. I start the encoder. It starts broadcasting. I
copy the URL/port address it gives me to the File...Open URL menu option in
WMP(10). WMP opens the URL and starts playback (albeit with a hilarious 5+
second web-lag). Audio and Video are what I hoped for.
Have tried twice with 2 third parties around the world, at the same time,
after emailing them the URL/port ref. Both report the following error
message -
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network error occurred.
The server might not be available. Verify that you are connected to the
network and that your proxy settings are correct.".
I have latest ZoneAlarm and have allowed WME to act as a server and for ZA
to remember this choice.
Question is, do I need to do something at my end? Or do my broadcastees need
to alter something? |

Hi,
Are you t behind any router or other NAT/Internet Sharing device? If so, you'll be sending
them an internal IP and they'll get this error.
Although I believe the encoder makes use of Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) where available,
but you might need to forward the port WME is using so that this will work.
If that isn't the case, try dropping ZA entirely, as it sounds like it's being blocked (the
encoder makes use of several processes so it might not be allowing the right one).

Nope, not behind any such things. But, you are probably right (again) - I'll
kill ZA (and everything else optional) before I try next time (re. several
processes - and BTW WME offers a "find a free port" option each time I go
through the "wizard" - do you think I should find a new port with each try?)
I don't mind a new ip address with each reboot I need to make, but why a new
port?
The encoder NG seems a bit too quiet ;-) And I know I should really decamp,

Another thing Jonathan - do you know of any way to send a URL/Port by email
eg http://169.254.236.83:1031/ so that the mail recipients can click it and
have it opened automatically by WMP rather by IE, or other default browser
trying to open it?

Hi Mac,
Well the encoder should also be using mms, so, mms://169.254.236.83:1031 should also work.
Of course, given the level of security in a lot of e-mail clients today, that may not even
show up as a link unfortunately.
Another way of doing it would be to setup a file on another webserver (doesn't matter where)
with a .wmx extension. This file would simply be a text file with nothing but the link
within it. So, you would link to http://whatever.com/whatever/whatever.wmx. The .wmx
extension is automatically setup to open up WMP which will then read the IP address within
the file and then finally connect to it.

Not quite sure I understand all that today Jonathan - but I suggest you take
a look at the Encoder NG where Neil has been gifting some of his WME wisdom
to me, most importantly, I suspect, that WME is not good at providing a
public URL.
I have been able to open the real URL in WMP, but I have lost sound for some
reason (nothing to do with WME I think, more my system being a bit flaky
today)
Two steps forward, one step back ;-)
Now all I need to do is to clone you with Neil ! (Seriously, hook up with
him, I think you would synergise).
