Windows XP does not support Distinctive Ring:

Distinctive Ring Is Not Supported by Windows 2000 Fax
Some third party hardware devices can provide a work-around:

Emerson Switchboard

ComSwitch®
I know of two third party fax applications that overcome the Distinctive
Ring problem:

FaxTalk Messenger Pro

Pigeon Mail n Fax

I am new to XP FAXing and am now wondering how to handle incoming FAX
calls on my single telephone line that shares an answering machine.
My telephone service provider (Verizon) offers a distinctive ring
feature. Is there available software out there that decodes the
sound.wav of the ringing telephone line and can direct the incoming
call to the FAXmodem for receipt of a FAX transmission ?
Thanks.
