New to all this, I was very pleased with myself when I used Windows Movie
Maker to make a 2 hr. film of video downloaded from my digital camcorder.
Film saved as .wmv, and runs fine on computer. But then I tried to burn DVD
with SONY burner and NERO. It would not allow it. I do not understand why,
and SONY was not helpful. At the project.wmv stage, is it possible to save
the movie in another format? Is there another make of external
burner/software that allows the .wmv
format? Grateful for any advice; spent many hours assembling/editing movie.

Not sure what errors you are getting but if I remember right nero will not
import wmv files, without adding the wma plug-in.
http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/en/wma-plugin.php
try installing this and try again. Also, make sure you are useing
NeroVision Express, and not just Nero Burning Rom. NeroVision Express is
Nero's DVD authoring program. Nero burning rom will burn your file to a
DVD, but will not convert it to Mpg2 or create the menus and structure
needed for a DVD

As Graham said save as DV-AVI.
Next Nero will work but only if you have the full version which includes
Nero Vision Express. If you have the free version that came on your computer
or with your burner it likely does not have NVE.
If you don't have NVE I don't normally recommend purchasing the full Nero
package for beginners as the learning curve is quite a bit higher with this
program. I recommend Ulead Movie Factory 3 for beginners and Ulead DVD
Workshop2 for those with experience. Both programs are listed on my website
along with a bunch of others and download links.
