Could you get the exact error? Also, assuming he's using Windows XP, he could simply try a
System Restore to restore back to before he had the problem. To do so, click Start, then
Help & Support, then "Undo changes to my computer using System Restore".

It had been working fine and he made no changes that he knew about. We checked all we knew

and seemed to be set up right. QOS is off, Norton is set to allow Messenger.
Tuning wizard checks OK.
