I believe Adobe remove the generate thumbnails option with the release of
Photoshop CS since the thumbnails are not available in that version either.

Is there a work around or a fix on the way?

I can not say one or the other but Adobe Photoshop's generate thumbnail
option was believed to have caused Window's explorer to crash when folders
containing a large number of images were opened.... This may be a true issue
but I never heard nothing official from Adobe or MS. All I know is when CS
was released the option was no longer available and I doubt it will return.
